Hello,

I just bought a Farmall M that runs fine at low and medium rpms. At higher rpms it vibrates to beat the band. The vibration seems to be coming from the transmission (in neutral) rather than the engine. Is there anything in the transmission that could be hitting the transmission cover? Or is only 3 of 4 cylinders firing the more likely problem?

Randy

Thanks for the ideas. The vibration is more than the hitch pin jumping around.

I went through the archives and found that the flywheel or hydraulic pump may be the cause. I'll check the flywheel to see if it is loose. Is there a way to see if it is warped without splitting the tractor?

I took an old loader off with some loss of fluid. I'll disconnect the hydraulic to see if the vibration settles down.

Push in the clutch, everything behind the flywheel will stop turning in a few seconds. If you still have the vibration, then it's engine or flywheel related. You can see the flywheel with the clutch removed (you also have to remove the hyd pump) but you can't remove it without splitting the tractor. I believe you can get to the bolts that hold it on without splitting, but looseness isn't likely. These tractors do vibrate, anything loose will shake. Unless your problem is severe, it may be normal.
