Just bought a Farmall 450 gas. The power steering seems to work ok when moving but when standing still it doesn't seem to work. Is there a valve or something that sticks? How do I check this? Also I have never had a tractor with TA how does this work or what is it's real purpose?
Is it ok to switch from low to high and back while moving? thanks for any help you can give me, Harlen

Here is something you might try. Loosen the coupling that holds the steering shaft to the front of the power steering unit. With the engine running turn the steering wheel as far as it will go to both sides a couple of times and then stop back in the center. Retighten the coupler and try the steering again to see if it works better. Also with engine running while trying to turn the steering wheel pull one of auxillary valves that is not hooked up to anything. If the steering wheel turns easier when the valve is pulled the flow divider valve probably needs to be replaced. Good luck. Ron

Harlen your power steering could be fine and you could have the problen as you have said. Some times the steering gears will lock up standing still. When the 450 was new they worked fine, but after all these years one can not get them perfect any more.

That is the way any ad on power steering I have ever seen works, Factory power steering ( that is power steering assest) is a little better, Hydro steering one finger any time.

It takes more power to steer when standing still so perhaps the steering is a it weak or hydraulics a little weak. The TA is ment to be shifted on the go. It enabeles you to shift down when needed for a tough spot or to slow down, then go back to regular speed when it gets easier. It should be shifted quickly and should not be used to slow the tractor as when approaching a stop sign on the road. It will not hold you back going down as hill either. I think the ta is great on my SMTA. If used properly it will last a long time,if not it will fail quickly.
