Bought a Super M today and the serial number is FBX293206x1 now that is just great except I can not find a listing on that in the places I have looked ( MY copy of 100 years of IH is out on loan). Now it looks like this tractor might have been white in the past as where the paint has chiped of it is white. Now I know that some expermental tractor were painted white but can someone check out this serial # and let me know a little more. OH yea it has a single front wheel if that makes any differance.
Thank JI CASE

1952 M, not a Super M, not an experimental. X is a K.

Well it is a Super M has the brakes ect that identify it as a super. The first letter in the serial number could be a K as they are supposed to be but the last one "x' followed by a one is definately an X. This one has me a little puzzeled also as the numbers do not show that it should be a super M but it is ...Casting housing #'s ext. say it is an M . Tell me you thoughts.
Thanks JI CASE

The serial tag on a Super M has the prefix SM, an M has FBK. If for some reason there was an experimental with the prefix FBX, it would not have a 6 digit serial number, as IH didn't make 300000 experimental M's, more like 10, if that many. If it has disk brakes that are held on by 3 bolts, those are Lambert brakes that were an option on M's and could also be retrofitted. The Super M disk brakes were held on by 6 bolts, I believe, and were also installed on M serials 294226-up. They will not fit serial 294225-down because the rear casting was not drilled for them, but yours is close, so this is not etched in stone. You could also have a replacement serial tag that is stamped with an X instead of an M. The engine will say C-248, I believe on the right side of the block, SM is a C-264, engine serial prefix (under the #1 spark plug) for an M is FBKM, for a SM, C-264. The grille of an SM has the IH symbol, this could have been changed. The X1 following the serial number is IH's code for a gasoline engine, as opposed to kerosene or distillate.

Well we are getting a little closer :) thanks for the help . First there is a prefix SM on the tractor, A closer look at the serial # indicated to me that it could well be a FBK reather than a X.
Now the the serial number as best I can tell now is FBX 293205X1 . It is a Gas burner and does have disk brakes but they are the 3 bolt type. The grill has Farmall emblem on it. This tractor is very steight and has no dent in the sheet metal, it appears the the decal are original and they say super M on the side of the tractor. Now I am going to check the cubic inches on the head adn see what size engine is in it and that should tell me I guess if it is indeed A Super M . Thanks for the help.

Don't confuse primer with white paint. Ih used white primer under a lot of paint (stuff) in the 40's and 50's. My KB-10 48 model truck is originally green but has white primer underneath. White primer when painted over with the correct number of coats gives a true red color for tractors. Why? Cost, white has no additives, red was hard to get during the war years. Stuff got painted blue during the war years. When restoring today if you want the true color of a tractor originally painted IH red,now Case Ih 2150, prime it with a white primer.
