About a week ago I posted a message asking what a Super M TA diesel was worth. We went and looked at the tractor this morning. This is what we found. The tractor hasn't been running for several years. It has 1 new piston and all the rings are new. The head has been reworked. The original injectors to the tractor were bad so the guy bought a MD engine that was used for demonstrations at a college for parts, this engine is complete and comes with the tractor. The tractor is missing the independant PTO. The sheet metal is perfect, not a dent or crease. The tractor has new front tires. It also has somthing on it that I have never seen on a Farmall, a hour meter. It is located on the right side near the timing cover, I don't know if it works but it reads 5,799 hours. From information that I have gathered and the shape that it is in, I didn't think we could get the tractor and a spare engine for less than $5,000. After we had looked things over good we asked the guy what he was asking for it. He looked at us and said we would probably think he was crazy but he was wanting $1,750. Needless to say this is now our tractor. I thought this was a pretty good deal since there was only 2,705 of these tractors made.

That's a once in a lifetime buy. Congradulations, and live it up because you will never have an opportunity like that again. Should have been around 4,000 bucks, instead you stole it from the guy. Great buy, and keep us posted on your progress!!

I'm a young farmallman and still learning. With that said, what does SMDTA stand for. I think i understand the M & Diesal. Thanks for clearing that up.

Farmallman, SMTA-D: Super M, with Torque Amplifyer- Diesel. SMTA (with gasoline engine)and SMTAD, and maybe;(SMTAP) built in 1954 only, the height of the letter series and the precursor to the number series, and the general design still in the Farmall line until 1975.

Looks like both parties to the sale are happy. Congratulations.

The gear driven service meter (Veeder Root) is fairly common on the SM size gas-start diesels. The 9 series had them earlier.

It can also be fitted to the Super M gas motor. Parts book says not to use it if motor has hydraulic pump. Dunno why unless the pump induces too much vibration under load. Of course, the diesel hydraulic pump would do the same but backwards. They are probably only found gas stationary motors like gensets and pumps. I would like to find one and put it on a F400G

The diesel and gas hour meters cannot interchange due to different rotation direction.
