(H) rod bolt grade

does anyone know if grade five bolts are ok to use for the rod caps, the old bolts are unusable, and all I could find were grade fives are they strong enough ?

You would have to know what the engine is & then look up the torque rating for the rods. Then get the torque rating for the gr. 5 bolts. If they are the same (or nearly) then they would be OK.

The standard torque for a 3/8" (I think they took a 9/16 wrench...) grade 5 bolt is only 30 ft.lb. . 3/8 Grade 8 is 43 ft.lb. Rod bolt torque for an H is 40 ft.lb. . If they are 7/16, the standard torque for a grade 5 is 49 ft.lb. .

$10 or $15 for bolts from McMaster Carr would seem cheap compared to the trouble a broken rod bolt would cause.
