How do you get the oil filter housing to seal on a Farmall A? It's a Fram (all they had in stock) C135, and the o-ring (square cross section) seems too narrow. I've tried to get it perfect all the way around, but it leaks like a sieve. I know a lot of you guys must have a trick or two for this. Help! .....Stan

On your next visit to your dentist, ask for some used dental tools. They work great for oil filter seal removal.

Stan, Be sure you have gotten all of the old square rubber rings out of the oil filter base. I've seen as many as three stacked on top of each other. Sometimes the old rubber rings are so hard you think you've reached the bottom of the oil filter base but there is still another old ring in there.

I had the same thing. I pulled the filter off and couldn't figure out how the heck I was supposed to get that thing to seal. Finally realised the old ring was hidden down in there. My friend though I was a master mechanic cause I figured it out. :-)

Special thanks to justin, who mentioned using a nutpick to clean out the groove! (this was dated back in 1999!) I am the first to admit, I'm not the "sharpest knife in the drawer", but using this board as a whetstone, I may be able to "cut it" sooner or later! Thanks again to this board and all of you guys!
PS: Last owner put a new seal over the old one, and somehow it wasn't leaking!

Stan, That square section O-Ring needs to be a good fit in that recess. Without seeing what you have, I think they gave you the wrong one. Did you remember to dig the old one out? I have never had a problem with that. Im not home so I dont have the correct NAPA number available, but with the right seal you should have no problem as long as that recess is cleaned properly.

Thanks Scotty, that's exactly what it was. Last owner put new ring over the old one!

I did the exact same thing a couple of years ago. Experience is a name we give to our mistakes.

I checked Archives and found some info on a "B", that is probably the same. Apparently, the seal I took out may have had company in there. I'll check it out and try to clean the groove better. If this don't solve it, Help!!!
