Neighbors got a 986 that when you pull or push the torque lever it does nothing. It acts like the linkage is broke. Is that a mechanical linkage or does it have some kind of hydraulic-piston setup like the clutch? Could have some roll pin or rod broke? It feels like the spring tension is still there to pull it back into direct drive. Or is there something internal?

Thanks for any help.

Chad

Thanks guys, looks like I will be crawling under the hood this weekend. Hope it is as simple as the cable, going to make the neighbor happy if it is.

Thanks again.

Check and see if the cable came off under the hood as it just slips into the hole on the lever and they do have a tendency to slide out , you can drill a small hole in the metal rod on the end of the cable and install a small flat washer and cotter pin then it can not come out again.

It has been a couple of years since my IH-986 did the same thing. I am a little fuzzy about the fix, but it was in the cam-linkage under the left side of the dash! I think that a very heavy-duty spring for the cam detent broke... well maybe?!?!?! I just sold the tractor this afternoon {$8500} so I can't go look and see if I can remember the way I fixed it... but I do remember that it was in the cam-linkage!
