I've been told that this is commonly caused by not tightening the axle bolts enough.

Since this is a working tractor, I'm assuming you may not be too picky about keeping it in truly original form. If you can find a set of wheels/rims/tires for a 400 or 450 at a reasonable price, you might consider them, as they are an 8-spoke wheel and a bit tougher than the 6-spoke found on your M. They'll also have the newer style (and perhaps wider) rim. The axle size should be the same.

I've replaced two, seems that when I put new tires and/or chains on these old girls, the traction is more than they have seen in fifty years and old casting let go.
I was able to find a wheel and block at every wrecker I tried. $100 Can.

They should not be hard to find. Have heard that this is common problem but in over fifty years around Hs and Ms have never seen one broke and we ran heavy mounted cotton and corn pickers.

All good advice so far, one caution 400 or 450 wheels won't take M deep "V" rims. The rims that fit 300- 450 rims are flatter in design and will not interchange with H-SMTA wheels. So if you elect to change you need the whole set up - might significantly increase the cost. BTDT Dick Davis

wouldn't it work to just use the other style wedges too?
