YTers,
The Super C I just got home has the wide rear axles. What was their purpose? Any pros/cons of the wide vs. narrow? I'd like to plow with it eventually.
Thanks,
Bill

You could always find another set of hubs, wheels, and tires and run it dualed up.

One example that required the 100" tread rear axle was the wide row option (42 to 60 in.) on the C-254 & C-254-A 2 row cultivators. That cultivator was used by tomato growers. Check out ebay item 3804627713 for some pictures of a C-254 wide row cultivator mounted on a tractor.

I think mine is the 88". I never can find the tape measure when I'm in the garage, but it will just barely fit through a standard garage door. It was an eye-opener when I had it on a trailer; even with the wheels almost all the way in, it just fit.
Thanks guys,

Bill

Standard axle was for max of 80 inch rear tread. That was measured at center of rims. Two optionals were available, 88 inches and 100 inches. These (especially the 100 inch are a pain because when used at normal wheel spacings, they stick out so far, the likelyhood of catching them in close quarters is a near certainty. If you catch one on something solid, the front end can come up in a heartbeat!

The wide axle is for spreading the wheels for cultivating. We used to keep the wheels in for plowing, mowing and ground work as the crops grew the wheels were spread to fit the rows for cultivating.

They wont be a problem for a plow. Wide wheel spacing was desired for some crops so the tires could run in the center of the rows.

here in hilly penna, spreading the rear tires as far as possible also provided much greater tractor stability in plowing and mowing sidehills.
