The tractor has over 6,000 hours but doesn't use any oil. Over the last couple years, you have to engage the starter longer and longer. When its cold you better plug-in the block heater or forgetit. We pull the fuel shut off cable out about half way until it tries to lite off. My question is there anything I can do other than an overhaul? Thanks.

I used to work on the fuel systems for these tractors a couple years ago. Yes, they can be rebuilt and yes it's not cheap. But it's far cheaper than a new pump. Also the injectors need to be looked over closely and not just reset.
Compression should be around 300 psi on a cold engine. Make sure the valve lift is correct as this affects air movement in and out of the cylinder. The "advance" cable you are talking about is actually the overfueler for the pump by pulling out to the first stop is overfuel, pulling out against the spring load on the stop is the shut off.
A good sign that the pump needs work is that the motor doesn't try to shut down at high idle when going down a hill or wants to rev higher than spec rpm's.
What color of smoke do you have at start up? White smoke on a cold engine is usually a clue that there might be a compression or air flow problem. I hope this helps

I had this problem on my 460 once

If yours is a true 756 diesel, it has the D310 German diesel. Cold blooded, from what I've heard.

Head down to your local Tractor Supply and get yourself a bottle of "911" diesel fuel system cleaner. There may be more serious problems, such as a worn injector pump, but try this first.

FWIW, I don't think the injector pump on the German diesels is rebuildable. You need to buy a new one, which means mucho dinero.

Don't overlook the obvious. Air filter & fuel filters. Does the 756 have the Bosch pump with the advance? Our 826 was hard to start cold for a while, replaced both air & both fuel filters & learned how to use that advance on the fuel pump & the 826 turned into an easy starter. After engine turns over about once, gently pull out on the advance - it feels like the choke on a gas motor.

I'm trying to remember here, I think the 56 series tractors were running Roosa - Master pumps I don't know about the 312, anyway most of those pumps can deliver a lot of fuel, however the proper spray pattern needs to be just right to get the proper atomization to fire with a cold cylinder. Now this is like the dog chasing its tale, you can take the nozzles in to be tested and rebuilt and bring them back and still not be ok because the pump has to deliver enough pressure to pop the springs on the nozzles and I can't remember but I think is around 1700 to 2200psi. so could be your pump needs service too. Like all diesels better get your checkbook out giving the fact they run a long time between tuneups but we all have to pay the piper. Just like these people with diesel pickups better trade them off before tuneup time 3 to 5 grand usually around 250 to 300thousand miles along time for a pickup. Anyway back to your tractor, good luck.

The Ger 310 has the Robert Bosch pump.

I'm probably suffering from CRS it's been twenty years since I've been in that business, too much hard work for me. Anyway the fuel system rules still apply as far as I know unless it's the fuel cell system much like Case used to use.

Dennis I would check compression first The valves must be 100% good on this engine for them to start. If you have never had the fuel system checked, you might have leaky injecters.

Is checking compression is to do on this engine and what reading should I see?

We have the same problem with the 666 with the D312 in it. Andy thinks that it could be in the fuel delivery system. I will be watching these responses.
