I have a 10-20 that has had a real bad radiator leak. The previous owner just filled the radiator and let it leak, filling it periodically when necessary with plain water. When cold weather would hit, he just drained out all the water. As a result, the cooling system has built up a lot of rust. I took the radiator apart to rebuild it and took a bucketfull of loose rust from the bottom. Someone told me that after I get the radiator finished, I should fill the cooling system with a solution of muriatic acid a couple of times to clean out the rust. Is this a good idea and, if so, what concentration should I use and how long should I leave it in

I'm feeling your pain. I'm currently redoing an F12 radiator and a cat 22 radiator at the same time. Muriatic acid as is sold in pool supply stores mixed aprox 30% with water will remove the rust but will also etch the good metal as well and I wouldn't recomend it. I have had success with disasembling the tanks from the core then chipping, scraping and wire brushing away all the loose rust (use a needlescaler if you have access to one.) When clean, coat area with a product such as (Rust Mort) or similar product found in automotive paint stores to kill or stop any rust from forming. After throughly drying, mininum 24 hours, coat surface with epoxy. Devcon epoxy although very pricy is excellent as its will with stand temps of 350 degrees. By the way I'm recoring the f12 radiator as I couldn't rod it out after cooking it in a radiator cleaning vat for three days. Oh well I didn't want to spend that extra day on vacation anyway.

I'd just spent some quality time flushing out the block real well. Using the acid will just etch away a little more of the metal, and you want to preserve as much of what's left as possible.

The acid will help clean up the block, but MAY make a sieve out of an older radiator core in short order. Personally, I would not use the acid, although I know some do.

I'm putting in a brand new radiator core.
