Any suggested automotive substitutes for Hy-Trans fluid for the hydraulic pump on my IH Farmall Cub?

Anything that meets Hytran specs. Don't think there is anything special about Hytran for old tractors, new ones, maybe so.

If you want to use HyTran it will work OK. However when Cub was built no one had ever heard of Hy Tran. Hy Tran is a compromise solution for an oil that must lubricate transmission and differental and also serve as hydraulic oil. For single purpose oil there are better solutions. Any good hydraulic oil will work just as good or better in hydraulic system. Just my two cents.

Don't mix different types of fluid in your touch control. If it has motor oil in it (earlier ones did), either stay with it or flush it out before changing. If you want to use something other than HYTRAN, due to either cost or availability, look on the can to make sure it is MS1209 compliant.

Sure go to the BigR or farm supply store and purchase some of their "crap" and put in your tractor!! My neighbor borrowed a 5 gallon can of HY-TRAN fluid from me a couple years ago and brought me a 5 gallon can of "quakerstate" tractor fluid!! I never let him unload it. It was the cheapest thing I ever did as I asked him why he do such a low thing as try to replace the HY-TRAN with than and he said "cost"! I said let that be a gift and never come borrow anything out of my shop again. He was a "common cheap borrowing pest"
He visits but acts insulted to this day but he puts that "other crap" in his tractors and I run HY-TRAN

Almost any oil can be safely run in a pure hyd. system.(Not common trans./hyd.) Cheapest oil you can run is straight hyd oil, about $15 for 5 gallons. But engine oils work great, even auto transmission fluid is fine. Just a waste of money running hytran when it isn't being used in a transmission / hyd system. I would stick with hytran though if you own/or share other tractors than do require hytran with your implements. Don't mix oils.

There are no substitutes.
HY-Tran is the best.
