The pto will not engage if there is an implement attached. growls & grinds, With nothing hooked to it , it will engage but it will not stop with clutch depressed. Is there an adjustment besides the clutch?

Hi, the 444 has a 2 stage clutch. The first thing to check is the clutch pedal adjustment. The adjustment is in the operators manual. I am going from memory from 25 years ago but I believe it is 3/4" free play.
That is adjusted by using a ruler standing upright on the running board, loosing the 2 bolts on the clutch pedal and putting a wrench on the flattened part of the clutch shaft and turning in the appropriate direction. If this adjustment fails then the pressure plate fingers have to be adjusted from the inspection plate on the under side of the bell housing. Better have a shop manual when doing this adjustment.

Make sure there is no dirt buildup on the running board or the running board is not bend upward as the clutch has to be depressed all the way to the runnig board to release the PTO clutch.

The other thing that happened our 434 was the adjusting nuts on the pressure plate fingers wore a groove in the nut, so by turning the nut 1/2 turn the nut was no longer in the groove and the PTO clutch was working again.

Be careful to set parking brake and block rear wheels when adjusting clutch.

Good luck
JB
