Does anyone know how strong a tranny the 3 speed in a 1566 is. Does it have a good track record? I heard the gears are a lot bigger than the 4 spd, but I was just wondering. Also, is it an easier shifter like I heard?

The three speed isn't any stronger then the 4 speed that was in the 1466 IMHO - it is sufficently durable for the tractor as long as no one gets carried away turning up the power. It sure doesn't shift any better. We never had a rear end fail in 1566 or 1586, but did have one fail in a 1486 - but then it was on a dozer blade getting some abuse when it happened. I have heard of the 3 speeds going out when there was significant slippage between the two rear tires (plowing without a dual).

I have heard from several people that the rearend
is a LOT stronger in the 1566/68, because it has
the planetary reduction and a bigger rearaxle.
I know of one guy who ran a 1566 turning out 215
pto hpfor several 1000 hours pulling a chiselplow.
