Hi All,

I just recently bought what was sold as a Farmall H tractor. It looked like it had been painted with a brush and had some homemade H decals on the sides of the hood. The ID tag had lots of paint over it when I bought it. It runs and drives good.

After I got it home I started cleaning off the ID plate and the number looks like SH 6xx J. Just 3 numbers in the serial number. Is this possible? Can't make out the last 2 yet. The plate does not look like it has been changed.

Now the strange part. It does not have live hydraulic, has a belly pump. Has Dist. Ign. not mag.

Stranger yet, It has drum brakes not disc. My IH dealer said that if it was a Super it had to have disc unless someone changed them because the disc were suppose to have lots of trouble.

Did they come with drum or could they be changed?

Also, 5th gear is fast. Seems to be closer to 20 MPH the 15 like an older H I had years ago.

What do I have? H or Super H, Or?

Thanks in advance

Took a quick look in Guy Fay's IH Tractor Data Book, and it has a couple of notes. One of them is that the earlier Super Hs may have actually been regular Hs. Second note I found is that earlier Super Hs had belly pump hydralics, and later ones live hydralics. Didn't find any notes regarding brakes.

I have seen the regular H notation in Guy's data book, also. However, the last 400 or so regular H's had the Super H disk brakes, so if his has drums, the rear end was swapped, as I don't think the SH rear end is drilled for the drum housing. Super H's were converted to live hydraulics in late 1953. I know what the book says, but I find it hard to believe that IH would put a SH prefix on a regular H, UNLESS the last 400 or so H's had the SH rear end, and an H engine. That's stretching it a little bit. I have not heard that explanation. Maybe Guy Fay will give his opinion.

Check the date code on the larger castings. A Super H will have an X, Y or Z (corresponding to '52, '53 or '54) as the last character in most/all date codes. Characters earlier in the alphabet correspond to earlier, non-Super years. Look also for "C164" cast in the upper right side of the block near the back. This also indicates a Super H.

All Super H's have disk brakes. I suppose someone could have retrofitted drum brakes, but it would be a difficult task - more costly than simply replacing disk brake parts. However it's also possible someone married an H rear end with a Super H front - would then account for drum brakes. Again a quick inspection of casting date codes would reveal whether this occurred.

Also note: Early production Super H's (about 11,000 units) were built with belly pump hydraulics. And the live pump was a delete option on the later production tractors. So not having a live pump does not necessarily mean a tractor is not a Super H!

Numeric dates were frequently stamped on rims and radiators tags as well.

first thing i look for is the carb. i'm sure all super h's used the "m" carb, while a straight h used a strange looking one unique to itself
