H starter switch

Where was the 1941 H starter switch mounted on the tractor? I just aquired a 41 H and it is mounted behind the steering post. Someone put a bolt through the post to engage the switch. This seems pretty crude. What was the stock set up? I have seen the post mounted across from the light switch box and some M's with the foot lever on the post to engage the switch at the rear. Like to know the correct setup for the 41 H.

I have a 41 H. It has a foot-operated push button starter switch.

I have a 41' H. My push button switch is mounted very low, in the middle of the frame next to the radiator shutter control lever. There was a hole drilled thru for the button portion, while the switch itself is mounted directly on the other side. It is easy to push by hand when starting from an un-mounted position. But if you are sitting in the seat, you have to use the toe of your boot.

I too have a 41 H, and like you, didn't like doing the dance to start it. I went to my local salvage yard and purchased a mounting bracket for the steering post and installed my switch there. I think I paid about 10 bucks and it was well worth it. It is an IH part, so don't feel bad about improving what you have. IH still sells the longer cables you will need to hook it up as well. These machines were adapted over the years to suit the operators. I made my M switch more accessable by getting the foot starter bracket. Do what you want to, it is your tractor and you might as well enjoy it. --Mark

I believe that what you have is the correct set-up for the earlier Hs. I agree, it does seem rather crude, and I really don't care for the foot operated lever set-up either. It is fairly easy to convert to the push button mounted on the side of the post.
