Have had it for 14 years and she's wore out. Started hammering last fall and now I want to rebuild. I see rebuild kits from $379 to $600? NAPA was $379. My bearing numbers are,35578-db
L-200 and 4 50. Mains are 35579 1/3 db, L-200 and 4 50. Are these standard bearings? And is that all I need to order a kit? The bearings are not wore to bad, haven't got to the pistons yet, but I suspect thats where the knocking is coming from. Some small metal parts in oil pan when I took it off. I bought a video on how to rebuild so far its been very helpful. Thanks for any info, Bill M

Got it down the the block, found out that my governer gear is all busted up, and it chewed up the cam gear. Have another post up and I need to find a place to get these parts. Also need to replace the clutch, plate, and bearings. The head, crank, rods are all going to the shop tomorrow, got everything marked, caps and such. Just wanted to say thanks for all the info.

Check your camshaft gear to camshaft. If it is loose it will knock high in the engine and won't make sense until you find it. The way I first found one was rolling in mains and noticed the camshaft rock back and forth when cranking thru slowly. The head was still on and the valve springs were centering the camshaft. Looked weird to see it happening.

I wouldn't buy the OHaul kit from the machine shop, they should tell you how much they have to take off the crank to clean it up. Then go to tractorkits.com. I just bought a kit for a B from them for $375 plus 25 S&H. Very happy. All USA parts. Tisco, Clevite etc. Included were pistons and sleeves, pin bushings, main and rod bearings and a full gasket set. You select what bearings you need for rods and mains -.010, .020 etc. I recommend that you have the rods reconditioned too.

Thanks, I thought the kit they priced me was too high at $619. I'll take the crank, head, and rods and have them look them over. Then order the kit with the bearing size they recommend after they have cleaned it up.

The part numbers you list do not make sense in the IH parts system. Are they stamped "std" ".002" or ".020" by chance??

I don't see any other stamped numbers on the bearings. Above these numbers it says fm ih USA.

Those are VERY old IH numbers for standard size bearings. (They have to be old if Bermuda Ken can't track them down.) The "4 50" stamped into them is probably the month/year they were made.

Thanks Jim, also had someone else email me and said they were the orginal 1950 bearings. Beleave it or not, they are in pretty good shape too. The guy I bought it off of in 1990, said he put rings and a clutch in it before I bought it. He said the orginal clutch, and graphite clutch bearing was still in it.

Bill, I can't answer about the part numbers, but I would suggest you take the crank to a shop and let them measure it and fit the bearings .

Thanks for the reply, so take the crank to the shop and let them order the kit, and correct bearings?

Bill, It's pretty hard to tell how much wear you have by eyeballing !
If your going to put that much money in rebuilding, you might as well make sure the crank has bearings of the correct size.

And I see that Bermuda Ken is "in here".
If you have questions about parts, Ken is "da man" !

Gary

Thanks Gary, there is a great shop an hour from here, (SE, Ohio) that I'll take the crank and bearings into, also going to have him do the head. The only thing I questioned from him was he priced the rebuild kit at $619 and our local NAPA said they could get it for $379?

Make sure the comparison is equal. The cheaper kit may be just pistons/sleeves/gaskets/bearings, while the other kit may also include the valve train set (valves/guides/springs/keepers/seals). Not saying it's a good deal, just compare apples to apples.

General Notes: The comment on reconditioning the rods is good, so make sure you get the pin bushings with your OH set. Pull a sleeve and measure the bottom OD at the O-ring seal to make sure which sleeve set you need (3 5/16" for the original C motor, possible 3 7/16" on a replacement block from a Super C). Mill the bottom plate on the oil pump flat. Make sure you keep all the main and rod bearing caps in the right place, they don't interchange.

Thanks for all the info, when you say mill the bottom plate of the oil pump flat you lost me. Sorry, but I'm not much of a mechanic. Are you talking about the plate with the 4 holes and the screnes?
