A buddy of mine is looking to time his C but cant find indicator/pointer to reference. While at the King auction we looked at a number of Cs and didnt see anything either on the ones we seen.

On the other hand the H and Ms all had a pointer.

Appreciate any info you may have.

There is a mark on the outside diameter of the fly wheel and I think the pointer is on the sorta half moon shaped inspection plate that is at the rear of the engine and bolted to the torque tube(bell housing)I think you have to try to look through the hole where you get in to grease the throw out bearing.
Myself, I take the number 1 plug out, use a soft wire inserted into the cylinder as a feeler and turn the engine until the piston comes to top dead center,(flashlight works sometimes too) then you are either on # 1 or #4 as they both come to the top at the same time.
You should be able to tell which one by looking to see if the rotor button is pointing on or near the # 1 or # 4 terminal inside the dist cap.
If it is pointing to # 1, and you are sure the piston is at the top, then watch the points and turn the dist just until the points open....you should be real close....close enough to start it anyway.
After you start the engine, rotate the dist. a little each way until the engine runs the best....and then tighten the bolt to hold the dist in place....you should be "good to go" then.
Oh yeah...while your in the dist, adjust the point gap to the proper setting.

Hope this helps !
Gary

And, it may be a very thin line with no letters. You may have to clean the flywheel of to see it -- but it is there.

It's inside the round cover on the bottom of the bellhousing, seems like it might be a line with a 1 and 4. Jim

There is a mark (DC-14 I believe) on the flyweel that can be seen by removing the inspection cover as mentioned in a previous message. Also another way to check (would suggest doing along with the flywheel mark)is to remove the valve cover and watch for when both valves are closed on cylinder #1, that way you know you have TDC on cylinder 1 and not 4, as they both will line up (at least very closly) to the DC-14 mark on the flywheel. Good Luck.

The C has a timing mark on the flywheel instead of a pointer on the crank. Its been awhile sence ive done one but i think its behind the starter or you have to take off the inspection cover under the bell housing . either way its on the flywheel. sorry im not more discriptive. hope this helps.

I haven't timed mine for a few years, but I'm pretty sure you have to remove an oblong cover just below the flywheel.
