Hi,

I just bought an IH crawler TD-5B.
Apparently it has a BD-144 or BD-154 engine in it.

Just wondering if any in this group know of what other International or other machinery is powered by this type of engine??

Just wanting to know when I'm lookng for parts what other machines may have what I need.

Also, are they worth rebuilding? Are they a low maintenace engine once you get them set up??
I know that may be a bit of an oxymoreon when you are talking about old equipment.

I believe the TD-5 came with the BD-144 engine same as my B-275. This engine is found in the B250, B275, B276(UK) & 354. The BD154 is very similar and came in the B414, 424, 434(UK),444, 364 & 384. My B-275 is pushing 5000 hours w/o a rebuild but will not start from cold w/o glow plugs. These engines are sleeved and most parts are available.

Just curious if your BD144 would ever start from cold without glow plugs? I was under the assumption that some diesels simply need the plugs when cold and that's not a sign of a weak engine just something to do with the design of the fuel system?

The tractor has never started for me w/o glow plugs or ether. The guy I bought the tractor from 15 years ago was starting it with ether. It cost me close to $200 to get the glow plugs working but I don't like to use ether. The owners manual says always start from cold with the glow plugs but I have seen some people say on the net they can start w/o the glow plugs after a fresh rebuild.

From what I've read these engines never got high marks for starting real well. The 154 might start a bit better with 23:1 compression vs 21:1 for BD144. All components of the starting system must be in top condition. Glow plug circuit must be in top condition. A lot of these engines are far from new so compression is probably down and starting will suffer. In real cold weather a block heater is probably a good idea.

I am about to buy an IH 364 from a good friend of mine. He has owned the tractor for around 10-12 years now and I ran it for him mowing hay for 3 summers. It will never start cold without the glow plugs. He knows the fellow who bought the tractor new and it has very low hours. I think use of glow plugs when cold is just a nature of this beast. Almost all Japanese diesels I've seen must use glow plugs on cold starts even when new. No doubt, it's not due to all these engines out there being worn, it's something to do with the fuel system and how the diesel "spray" is injected in the intake. I'll bet your BD144 is fine and has been like that since the beginning. By the way, avoid using "starting fluid", buy you some WD40 and it will crank you tractor as well as ether and isn't so hard on the pistons/ring lands. Try it sometime, you'll like it. It works like a charm.
