Other than the black stripe, whats the difference between one of these and a normal 1066? Are they just newer?

Jeff: I may have another possible difference. Shortly after I bought my 1066 in Sept 1975, which would make it one of the last non black stripe tractors. Later that fall the tractor broke a rocker arm. I called the dealer, only to find there had been a recall, and there was a complete new rocker arm assembly there for my tractor. A technician came right out and installed it. It included complete new shaft, rocker arms and the hold down bushings. He told me these were being replaced on all 1066 going back to 1972. Given the timing on this my guess is that all black stripe tractors had the heavier rocker arm assembly.

p-c-y: My 1066 had the one piece drawbar, but not the 3 point linkage same as 86 series. It was a mid 1975 non black stripe.

Jeff: There is more difference than the black stripe. My 1066 was a 75 and it was not a black stripe. I don't remember the precise difference but I believe it is in the rear axles. I believe they were upgraded to the same axle as the 1086. It could also be a couple more items, but in all cases it was upgrades to 1086 specs. There is a discussion in the archives on this subject from about two years ago. I'm trying to remember who was involved. JD Humm and Cliff Neubauer, come to mind as possible, try them.

I think the rear axle housings were changed to the 86 series style but they still used the 3.25" axles compared to the 3.5" on the 1086. The black stripes also got the heavier 3pt hitch linkages used on the 86 series. We have a '74 1066, a black stripe 1066 and a 1086 so if we ever get them all in the same place at the same time I will look them over closely to see what differences I can come up with.

Just styling. Same engine, trans, everything. IH just wanted better styling, and I have heard some people say that IH made that change with the new 86 styling in mind, kind of a change before the change. Otherwise, white stripe and black stripe - only difference is paint and decals.

The paint job is pretty much the difference. Black stripe models are the last ones made. 1975 or 1976, if I remember correctly.
