Just bought a 1950 farmall C , after the purchase i noticed that under 2 coats of faded and chipped red paint that the entire tractor is white (w/exception of the wheels and other attaching parts). All the casting numbers are late 1949, and the serial number indicates this was the 541st C tractor made in 1950> My question is:(and I hope Guy Fay responds) If i were to restore this tractor what should I do to document that is was a white demontrator, I know that there is alot of fakes out there....actually I'm thinking of showing the tractor just as it is ...thanks for any responds

Ed,

Since your serial number and casting numbers check out, the next thing I would do is take a lot of pictures. My demonstrator Cub pictures were made more dramatic by a session with the pressure washer.

I've just been and had a bit of a hunt on this site and it looks like the best guess on the serial number range is from #47010 to #54411. If your casting codes match for late 1949 or early 1950 then it looks like you have a demonstrator. Especially since the white paint seems to be only on the main chassis and not the wheels and a few other small components (these were assembled/painted on a different production line and fitted to the tractor after it was painted). Hope this helps. SAm in NS

thanks SAm, you can imagine how exciting the possibility of this tractor being part of the history of the mid-century promotion is! I guess now i will enter on a trek to find out as much as i can about not only the white tractors, but the promotion itself..... would'nt it be fun to hear from someone who actually witnessed these tractors being used/demonstrated in 1950

There was a post concerning C Demonstrators a couple of weeks ago. If I remember right the serial numbers were a lot larger. About 6 months ago there was some discussion about this. It was mentioned that IH used a white primer coat. This would explain why a lot of people think that they have what they believe are white demonstrators when they are actually regular production tractors.

Guy Fay and some others please correct me but IH didn't use white primer and in most cases didn't use any primer. I think they did use some sort of sealer on maybe their diesel engine blocks? In Fay's Letter Series Originality Guide it shows a Cub being painted and it's pretty much red paint going over bare metal. If the number checks out, and it sounds like it does, I would try to strip a good deal of the red paint off, and take LOTS of pictures! Make sure you document the serial number!
