Something a little more involved

I know this board is mostly concerned with tinkering around with old Farmalls, not heavy-duty mechanic work, but I'm hoping someone out there might have some advice for me.

My Dad has an old Farmall 756 gas that we recently had retrofitted with a D-360 engine from a retired prison bus. In the bus, the engine had a turbocharger and an aftercooler. The mechanic that did the retrofit didn't turn down the injector pump, so the engine is getting WAY too much fuel without the turbo. Just cranking it over creates clouds of diesel smoke. When running, it just fills the barn with dense diesel smoke. Good thing the doors are open.

What I need to know is how to adjust the injector pump, and/or any of the pitfalls involved. This is a Bosch inline pump, the kind the tractor pullers absolutely love, not your typical Bosch manifold pump.

Setting the fuel rate sets the maximum fuel that the pump CAN DELIVER at FULL LOAD. If the engine is smoking heavily AT IDLE, setting down the maximum fuel rate is not going to affect that.

If the engine is getting too much fuel from the pump, to all cylinders, at idle, it would not only smoke, it would speed up to whatever speed that amount of fuel would run it! That's how diesels work.

Have you run it long enough to warm up? Sounds like you might have restricted air intake, or injector problems.

We installed the engine without the turbo or aftercooler. Obviously, it's getting less air than before, so I guess you can say the intake is "restricted" in a sense.

I suspect that the air is the limiting factor here as you do. Since there's no way to increase the air getting to the engine without significant modifications, the only solution is to decrease the amount of fuel to match that air. At least, that's what my pea brain has logically concluded.

At idle up through about half throttle, the engine sounds pretty good and doesn't smoke too much. It's when you open 'er up that she starts to run a bit rough and belch smoke. The thing is, it doesn't sound like it's skipping. I fly model airplanes, and it sounds to me like it's fat, too rich. The pump's pouring in more fuel than the engine can draw air for...
