I am working on a cub that has been parked for a couple years,I have it running but not as well as it should,it has good compression and the carburetor has been rebuilt,I have done a tune up including points and condensor in the j4 magneto,it starts and runs it fires on all cylinders but the spark at the plugs seems to be weak it is not a good blue snap kind of spark,I have rechecked my point setting and have checked timing, the former owner says that it lacked power and was hard to start when they parked it,I am leaning towards a mag.problem any help would be appreciated.

Before you start ripping into the mag, check the plugs.. are they Champion D-21's?

Also, click on the link below and have a read on the Best of H.L. Chauvin. Also the FAQ's at the ATIS board, the link is there as well.

You might also want to have a look at the service manuals under Blue Ribbon, they can be of immense help in diagnosing problems.

Sounds like either the mag coil is going bad or the magnets are weak. Try magnetoparts.com

Hang a coil from an H or M under the hood power it and use the mag as a distributor, My cub has been that way for a long time, starts and run good. You can't get your mag looked at for the price of a coil
