I am rebuilding the front end on my SH. After installing the new upper and lower bushings there
still is a significant amount of lateral movement in the shaft at the lower bushing. I don't have anything to compare this to so I don't know if it is excessive. What is normal? Should the shaft fit the bushing without play? How much play is normal? I've got $100 into this and would like to think that the new parts made a difference. This is my first H.

I had to replace the shaft in my M. The shaft itself was badly worn.

Ideally there should be no lateral play in either the lower or upper bushings. This especially necessary for the upper bushing. However a small amount (like maybe .020 or .030) of movement in the lower bushing will not cause a problem.

If you've installed new bushings and there's still noticable movement, this trick has worked for me: Estimate (or better yet measure with a dial indicator…) how much play you've got with the new bushing. Now remove the pivot shaft and carefully knock out the new bushing. Obtain some shim stock of thickness a bit less than ½ of the lateral play that must be taken up, and the same width as the bushing. Wrap the shim stock around the OD of the bushing, then press the bushing back into place (you may need to cut a slot in the bushing and squeeze it a bit to get it to fit back in it's bore). If you get it right the pivot shaft will now turn smoothly with virtually no horizontal play.

Hope this helps!
