I'm a fairly mechanically inclined person but I have absolutely no experience with tractors. I've been researching tractors for a while and decided to buy something in the 50 to 70hp range with a loader and cab. Firstly, I want something to help build a house with and later for use in the Sugar bush, gathering firewood, landscaping, snowblowing etc. My budget is 10-15. I'd been looking mostly at John Deere because a had this notion that they were the best and that I'd have less trouble finding parts (because I'm a neophite with tractors I thought I'd stick to the name brands). A few people mentioned to me that the other brands ie. Ford, International, and Massy-Fergusson were just as good. So, I began looking at these brands and noticed that I could buy a 4wd with a loader and cab within my price range.
I found this 584 with loader, cab and 4wd. The owner's asking 15,000. He says that he has the reciepts from an engine rebuild 100 hours ago and that the tractor is immaculate, (everything works-save for the parking brake). From the prices that I've seen online, even with it's condition, it seems a couple thousand high. Could a 24 year old tractor of this type be worth this?

Hi Nature Boy, they are great tractors but they have one weakness and that is the parking brake. People forget to release the parking brake and operate the tractor. Result is groundup parking brake lining in the hydraulic fluid, this will clog the hydraulic filter and sometimes the splitter valve that regulates the hydraulic oil flow ratio between 3 pt, remotes, PS and PB.

I would also question how many hrs were on the engine before rebuild. These engines tend to run along time without repiar if they have been properly maintained. Sometimes a piston ring will break or if the fan belt breaks and the engine overheats it will blowout the 'O' ring in the bottom of the sleeves and let antifreeze into the crankcase oil.

Good luck

Thanks for the heads up. You mentioned the probable causes for the engine needing to be over hauled. Do you think that the original cause could be a concern after the rebuild? If the rebuild is done professionally, shouldn't the engine be free from abnormalities?

Also, does anyone know if there are used backhoes available for this tractor?

I would not be concerned about the engine rebuild if it was done properly. My brother's 684 broke a piston ring when it was still under waranty and it now has 7000 hrs on it without problem.

I would be more concerned about the parking brake.
Sometimes it is only the cable that brakes or requires adjustment. But a few years ago I was at IH dealer and chatting to mechanic and he was busy cleaning out the hydraulic system and transmisson/differential on a 674 that someone had operated with the parking brake on.

I believe the parking brake band can be changed by removing seat and fuel tanks and top off the differential were the hydraulic oil filler plug is.

Bernard le Mecano can properly tell you in more detial and he knows these tractors very well.

Nature Boy, I'm not married to my tractor but its a 584 and I have yet to see anything compare to it. For that size of tractor you won't find a better performer for fuel economy, guts and starting ease. 584's bring $9950 around here without loaders and there seem to be lots of them in the farm papers. If a dealer feels they are worth 10 grand there must be some good value in them..if you add a cab and a loader..I don't think its way over priced..somewhere between 12 and 13 would be going price in my opinion...at any rate they are good performers for a 52 horse tractor....Mike in Exeter Ontario
