Gentlemen,

is there any harm in replacing a worn (almost smooth) rear tire with a new one when the other side is 50 - 60%? One front tire (narrow front) is fairly weather checked as well.

Any recommendations? Try find a used one? Do used ones exist?

Thanks, Eric

Check your local tire places for used ones(also watch local auctions- you sometimes see duals come up that might be a good matched set of the right size).

But, if you can't find one, you're probably not gonna hurt anything running one new rear tire and one 50% unless you spend the majority of your time running it in high gear down hard-surfaced roads. For general "off road" work, it won't hurt enough that you'd ever know it. The spider gears in the differential will be turning slightly when you're driving straight is the only difference.

We have three 90's model John Deere(yeah, I know) 4x4 tractors on our ranch that we use alot every day and not a one of them has a matched set(wear-wise) of tires. We just replace one when it gets ruined, regardles of the others.

One thing you would probably want to do, though, is make sure whatever new tire you get is the same as the other as far as bias ply or radial.

Eric, I would go to your local farm tire repair shop. Very often they have a selection of various sizes of used tractor rear tires. You may even be able to get two matching used ones if you're lucky. In my opinion for the fronts..... they are cheap enough that you should just get two new ones and not have to worry about them again.
