We used to have a 1956 400 with fast hitch that had a second hyd. cylinder mounted horizontally to raise and lower front of the hitch. Is this standard for the 400īs fast hitch and what was this called?

Probably is standard--my brother's 400 is equipped that way. Looks to me it's for leveling out the hitch. Fast hitch experts will have to chip in for more info.

It is called the "Depth Adjusting Rockshaft Cylinder" which is different from the "Rocker Arm" that attaches to the left of the battery box.

All 300s and 400s could be equipped with them. It extends the movement range of the lift both up and down. It can be locked out with a 1" pin. I find it handy for making small movements on a plow. It is useful for lifting mounted plows and harrows several feet off the ground like a three point hitch.

Thanks, guys. I remember (30-40 years ago)we removed the cylinder and installing the pin, then used the cylinder on the front cultivators. Also, got my foot caught in the mechanism while standing on front of hitch when it was being raised when I was around 9 yrs old, and lost a new Redwing boot. Took months for the bones to mend and I never got close to that thing again when it was operating. If you have one of these hitches, next time you use it, you can see the scissor effect that got me. Did any other Farmalls have this besides 300 and 400?

Some late late Super MTAs had fast hitch, didn't they? Those would be the only other tractors that might have this design of fast hitch. When they went to the 350s and 450s, they used the newer, simpler fast hitch you see on the 460s and 560s.
