My IH manual for my early Super M says to set the valve lifter clearance at .017 with the engine hot. Does anyone know what the cold setting might be? Would .018 be enough to compensate for expansion when the engine is hot? Would .020 be too much? I seem to have read somewhere that they are set cold now as it is more accurate. Is that correct or nonsense? Thanks for the help!

The cold reading is just so you can start and run the engine after an overhaul, etc.--they need to be set hot. I set mine at .018 cold, then to .017 hot, seems to me most are a little tight when hot, but .018-.019 is probably ok initially.
