I am in the process of restoring a 656 hydro to a usable condition. I gave $3500 for it about five years ago. I have had to have some parts made at the machine shop and the rest from Case-Ih. New tires and new front rims. Replaced all seals and bearings where needed, engine overhaul and painting. I think I will have about $9500.00 in it when it is finished. Is this about the expense some one should ensue when doing this or have I spent to much. I know that I can use the tractor on the farm and recoup the expense I have been out. I think that a tractor like this new now would be about 20k.

Hate to tell you this but in west central Illinois you could only get about 3500 to 4000 for a good 656 hydro The 656 is a good tractor but most people are afraid of the hydro because of the cost of overhauling it. In our shop you would be looking around 4500.00 to rebuild it and that is refacing all the plates and no charge pump

The other week I watched a 656 gear go at auction for 7500. It had a rebuilt engine and looked shed kept, but that was about it. The tires were almost ornamental. I'd say you're doing pretty good for the money. Love to get a 656 myself, but that one was a little too rich for my blood. Chances are a new tractor like that would be more than 20k, and wouldnt last as long. Good luck with it, and i bet it runs great!

If a mechanicly sound 656 Hydro is what you wanted and you have a use for it, you got yourself a nice tractor. I have a 656D gear and I love it. You may have a good amount of money into it, but at least you know what you have and if done right, you should have many trouble free years ahead.

I can't help you with your question, but thank you for the post. I have been considering a 656 or 756 as a project, and your post at least shows that it is possible. If you wouldn't mind sending me more details, I'd really appreciate it. I've unhidden my e-mail address for your use.
