What is a good head worth? Just had mine, which I thought was pretty good into a good engine machine shop that has treated me right in the past, and they found a small crack and that it needs seats and valves. Estimate $450 - 500 to make like new. Engine ran good when I took it off, this surprised me. I was about to just bolt it back on and go, but I took it off when I found rust on the valve spring caps, and wondered about what lay below. Took it to the shop to check it out. I am restoring this 44 H which had been in my wife's farm since new for shows and parades - it won't work very hard.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Chuck

A remanufactured head could run you ~$550. Having the head rebuilt locally would be about the same (here at least).

If the tractor is well used, you might be making some trouble for yourself if you just do the head. If there is any margin left on the valves, you could just try lapping them in and letting it go at that.

The head on my H was cracked between the center two bolt holes, but never leaked. I did not reuse that head when I rebuilt the motor, but I think that a little rtv around the studs and some stop leak would have kept the water on it's own side. If it doesn't work, you will have wasted a head gasket.

The first thing I would do is get a second opinion. It is not surprising that it might need valves and seats, and probably valve guides as well, but did they tell you that they could not do a simple valve job? They may be trying to sell you a bunch of stuff that you do not need, and they may have just been telling you what it would cost if everything needed replaced. As far as the crack goes, most of these old heads have cracks in them, but often times the crack is in an area where it won't hurt anything, did they confirm that the crack was causing a leak?

If it were me, I would junk that head unless you are very fond of it, and find a gas head which will give you more power. I found a 300 head for 75 dollars and had it rebuilt for around 200 dollars and that included cutting new seats in the head for installing steal seats for the intake valves and some new valves. (Super H, 300 and 350 heads will work and they have rotors on the exhaust valves also!) It works great on my H.
