have a 1940 h that has a water pump and thermostat but has a radiator that will only accept a non pressure cap. is this a workable combination or is this the wrong radiator?

People put a lot of stock in serial numbers and what it should and shouldn't have, but so many of these old tractors are parts from others. As I understand it, the old H & M radiators were smaller
in terms of cooling capacity and couldn't handle pressure. I also beleiuve that a few of the very early ones were thermosyphon. In short it looks like a pump, but really isn't.

H's and M's were never thermosyphon, only the A,B,C, and possibly early Super A's. As to whether the H and M were pressurized or not, or whether the radiators were changed, depends on what cap they have, as the caps don't interchange. Serial numbers are useful to see when your tractor was built -- some of us like to restore them to original condition, or at least like to know how they were equipped when new -- for that you need a serial number.

All Super A's except the A-1 were thermosyphon, I meant to say that the early Super A radiator may not have been pressurized, mine is.

That is the same exact set-up that is on my 1940 H, it is correct, and works very well.

The H used a pressurized cap beginning with SN 115030 (mid 1942).

My H is a 1940 and had the same setup, non-pressurized cap. I just put in a new radiator yesterday, it uses a pressurized cap. I used it for about 3 hours cleaning out the barn (I've got a loader on it) and didn't have any problems.
