Okay, I still havent figured out what kit I need for my carb, mainly because it has been attached to the manifold. I pulled it off, and brought it in. Its sitting right in front of me, where do I look for model numbers, or Identifing characteristics of a certain carb...Distillate, gas, you know!

The only thing I can make out o nthe thing is Zenith, on the back, there is some writing under it, but it illegible.

help meh!

IH used two or three Zenith carbs. You need a parts manual, then you can easily identify it. In the absence of that, take it to your Case-IH dealer and look at the diagrams on the computer screen. Pay particular attention to the shape of the upper edge of the bowl (remove the throttle body) or the shape of the gasket. As to gas or distillate, the distillate version has an adjustable main jet, the gas version has a plug where where the adjusting screw (needle) goes--it could have been changed from distillate to gas, also.

Ok, Ill describe it to you, sitting in front of me.

ok. The intake is facing my right, as it came off of the tractor.

Starting on the left-going right.

Sticking straight out, on the bottom of the bowl, there is a T-handle adjuster, It is a needle. This needle faces the front of the tractor.

Going back, on the back of the carb, facng down there is a petcock, or a drain cock? Not a needle.

up top, there is a needle, facing at a 45 degree angle down into the carb, it has a flat head on it.

The float on the inside is seperated into 2 seperate bouys.

Gasket was destroyed upon disassembly.

You have a distillate/kerosene carb. Again the Zenith carbs look alike to me from the outside. You have to compare the shape of the top of the bowl with the diagram, unless you can find the actual carb number that crosses with the IH number -- you need to see a dealer or get a parts book. Other than that, you may be able to buy a generic kit that fits your carb, as many of the parts are the same -- the gasket will not be, and the jetting may be different.

Did some cleaning and found A number on a little round tag on the top.

A B (or 8) 6 1 6 D C

Under that nu,ber there is the sequence 9749

Im thinking the D C stands for Distillate (C)

and th 49 is the year of manufacture?

48616DC is the carb of a 1948 Super A. It is a Zenith 161 X 7 distillate/kerosene carb. It will take gasket set 352896 R1 or overhaul kit 355262 R91. Please confirm this with your Case-IH dealer!!

ok..so what does the 9749 mean?

Just coincidence that it is a 49 C and the last 2 digits are 49?

Where can I find a '49 C distillate carb?

I have no idea what 9749 means, except that I'm sure it has nothing to do with a 49 C. As to a new carb, try Denny's Carb Shop, 937-368-2304. If they don't have that exact model--it wasn't on very many tractors, there are others that will fit. Unless your carb is totally shot, you will save a lot of money by putting a kit in it. My fingers are getting tired. You need an Operator's, Parts, and Service manual, and a subscribtion to Red Power Magazine, which contains ads for about every parts place in existence. Good Luck.

Tommy H;

The first number-48616DC is just the I.H. part number for that particular carb. The numbers and letters have no other meaning(to my knowledge) other than the letters correspond to replacement or updated models I.E. an H carb(distillate) has a part number of 45108DA/ DB/ DC/DD. H gas carbs-59081DA/DB/DC etc...

The second number is the Zenith company's part number for the carburator. Four digit numbers on I.H. tractors are earliest and newer tractors had Zenith numbers going up into five digit numbers.
