Thanks so much for all the nice response. Living in Western Arizona, my closest Case Dealer is over 50 miles away & I ordered 2 cases (12 Cans) more than 2 weeks ago. I quit calling and asked them to call me if it comes in. Maybe I will get a call next week. My lowest bid to paint my 04 Orchard is $3500. Thats seems to be pretty high & maybe they thought it was a Rolls Royce. It has a lot of outside tin. But it is in excellent shape and not all beat to death. After searching, the Carter & Gruenewald in Brooklyn WI will most likely be my next contact. They show it to be $5.25 per can, $11.00 per quart, $40.00 per gallon. Thanks so much. Anyone can always get helpful advice on this board. A "special" thanks to CNKS who is always knowledgeable and I have read so many of your interesting comments & helpful advice (From Archives to the present day).

In response to all the guys trashing Van Sickle paint. I'm sure all of you are far smarter and more experienced than I am, so please help educate me. How many of you have painted a tractor with Van Sickle paint? Does your Case IH dealer sell paint made by Case and labeled Case IH 2150 on the can? The experience I referenced in my first reply was about spray paint I bought from a Case IH dealer but was not Case IH (brand). I don't remember the brand but it was identified as IH 2150 paint. So I stand corrected, and apologize to the gentleman who asked the question. With all the paint experts out there I'm amazed at the number of tractors I see with the incorrect shade of Farmall Red.

Wilson, I would love to have one of those, but it would take all my money BEFORE it was restored. That is one good-looking tractor. But, I'll just piddle with my letter series ones.

There were at least 3 shades of "Farmall red". I don't know which Van Sickle is a copy of. Considering only the letter and number series, the first was IH 50, used until about 1949, the second was 1102b used until the "late" 50's. don't know the exact year, the final and current is IH 2150. IH 50 and 2150 can still be mixed by the major companies. Far as I know 1102b is no longer mixed by anyone (if someone knows the Dupont or PPG number it crosses to, I would like to know). 2150 is considered to be the substitute for 1102b. The shade of your paint depends on who makes it, how accurate they are, and the particular batch of paint. I don't know that the company(ies) that make it for Case-IH are any more or less accurate than the others, as far as the correct shade. I have seen variations in batches of paint mixed by the same dealer, and have heard of variations in color of 2150 both in spray cans and in the gallon cans. Van Sickle is "tractor store paint", that means it doesn't cost much. and that you get what you pay for. In my mind the minimum quality paint that will produce acceptable results is labeled IH 2150, and is the paint manufactured for Case-IH, not some IH 2150 "equivalent" that the particular dealer might sell. For spray guns major brands such as PPG, Dupont, and Martin Senour, etc, are higher quality paint. Don't expect an absolutely correct color from any of them.

As far as I know, all of Case IH paint is made by Valspar Paints here in Rockford, Illinois. They also make all the paint for John Deere, New Holland, Ford and almost all of the tractors. (Valspar also makes tractor paint for other companies like Farm & Fleet, etc. which is not the same formula and does not last the same as original Case IH Paint! It will turn pink if it sets out side for a year or longer.) I have a good friend that works at Valspar and will ask him if he knows of any other Valspar plants that makes tractor paint, but I am about 99.9% sure that it is only made here in Rockford! All of their cans have batch numbers on them so if you need more then one can, make sure you get the same batch numbers on all your cans or you may NOT get a perfect match. If you are using different batch numbers, you should mix them together before you start to paint. This is true of any paint! Good luck with your painting and use ONLY CASE IH paint made by VALSPAR for you Farmall tractors please!!! (And it helps our economy here in Rockford!)

Paul, A word of warning! Keep in mind that spray paint sold by Case dealers comes from various paint companies. I bought some from my local dealer identified as IH 2150, painted a pre- filter for my SAV only to find out after it dried that the color was several shades darker than the original Farmall red. I will never by paint from a case dealer again. One source I have used is P&R Supply Co, Dodge City, Kansas 877-227-5005. They sell Van Sickle Paint in spray cans. This paint company has been making farm tractor and implement paint since 1907. They make paint in the orginal farmall red at a reasonable cost and excellent quality.

If you are concerned about the color being several shades darker then DO NOT use the Van-Sickle brand, it is junk. I have used an extensive number of aerosol 2150 cans from my Case-IH dealer, I have never had a problem with the color, nor have I had a problem with the paint matching what is already on the tractor, even though the paint did not come from the same production lot. Leave the Van-Sickle paint on the shelf at your farm supply store.

I have had the opposite experience. For rattle can paint Case-IH paint is as good as it gets. Flows out good, dries fast and has good gloss. I have also tried Van Sickle. Too easy to get runs, dries VERY slow and is poor quality. Have heard their spray gun paint is just as bad. Their ads say as "good as the paint that came on your tractor" or something like that. Thing is the 40's and 50's paint was so lousy, maybe it is. Van Sickle is alklyd (sp?) or synthetic enamel -- the newer paints are acrylic enamel or urethane (I don't think you can get urethane in spray cans because it requires hardener. All manufacturers have an occasional bad batch of paint.
