I posted a question the other day about a McCormick # 620 plow that Hugh McKay answered about it. I was wondering, if a person would want a general plow parts catalog, or book of some kind, what would cover a lot of the different IH models? Is there such a thing ? Or, is there one for the IH plows built in the time frame from about 1950's thru 1970's ?
Thank you for any leads..... . oh yes, I will find out tomorrow if I buy this auction plow or not - the # 620 one I have been eyeballing ! LOL!

I have an IH plow parts catalog, PO-4. I is about 2 inches thick and has plow parts info for most older plows, including plow bottoms and moldboards. It is dated 1954. There are so many differend mold boards and plow bottoms it's hard to follow all of it. The plow bottoms are generally listed separately and there are so many different plows and bottoms, that the possible combinations would be huge!

MJD: I was able to give you what answer I gave, as I have the plow parts book covering the 620. That book is number PO-9 and covers at least 33 plow models. I say at least 33 as I feel there were more plows in this book at one time. The book is a three ring bound type whereby sections can be added or deleted. It seems to cover plows built primarily in the 1960s, however the SA plow models 189 and 193 are in there as well. A plow that is obviously not there is the model 510 introduced in the late 60s or early 70s. This book also has 2 sections on I-F11 101 and the 210 plow with no text.

Further to this I went to a site the other day called Iron Solutions. This site has over 48,000 items of used equipment listed for sale across North America. I typed in IH model 510 plows. There were about a dozen IH 510 plows listed for sale and everyone of them were in Kansas in US or the Maritime Provinces of Canada. Could it be that those two general areas are the only places IH ever sold the 510 plow? I also checked the model 710 built in same era and close to same sizes as it relates to number of bottoms. There were at least 3 doz 710 plows and none of them were in Kansas or the Maritimes. My plow book came from Nebraska. Could it be that these plow books were custom made for each dealer, depending on what was sold in his area?

Another factor about this book I have is it only covers plow frames, hitches, gauge wheels, etc. Basically everything but moldboards. It states inside the cover moldboards are covered in another book. Question is how many other books? I see another factor in play as well, inside the front cover of my book is a note to dealer," As soon as You receive your parts book PO-9, it supersedes PO-7 and PO-7 should be destroyed immediately." How many of those are still floating around? Maybe another book has superseded book PO-9 by now?

I think if you are buying plow books the possibility of custom made books, people removing sections from these books and superseded books, you best check to see if your plow is in there. There are also parts manuals floating around for specific models and that may be a better buy for the plow buyer.

Bill: Glad to hear your responce. If you notice I did phrase that as a question. I bought in Nova Scotia a new 510 plow 5x16 bottoms in 1975. The 710 plow had been on the market some 10 years then while the 510 about 5 years. The 710 had more clearance both vertical and horizontal, thus had already become the plow of choice for farmers plowing trash such as corn stalks, as was the practice in 1970s. I can tell you that when I bought my plow the 710 in 5x16 size was a lot more money than the 510 in 5x16. Of course the 710 went on to become the 720, basically the same plow with some improvments. By the same sign the 510 had replaced the 540, 550 and 560 being 4,5 and 6 bottom, in the early 70s The 510 had a much heavier frame and a bit more clearence than the 540, 550 and 560.

If you also take notice in my question, I did say general area. Back in the 60s and 70s I did travel quite extensively in Eastern Canada and New England. While at that time we were plowing down some corn stalks, we were still quite heavily into hay, corn and beans rotation, thus we were probably quite satisfied with the 510 plow. The 510 was an excellent sod plow. By the same sign in those days the corn belt growers were probably looking for more clearence, thus I can see them going 710 all the way.

The other fact that would be interesting to know, is what percentage of 540, 550, 560 and 510 plows were built in relation to 710 and 720. Another question also is what effect is notill having on plows for sale in a given area. I can also say I have seen numerous used machines of different makes, trucked a 1000 miles, only to find a local dealer knew nothing about the machine. I have seen that one several times in my lifetime. There were areas of this continant certain models of all machines were never sold. I was not trying to nail specific areas of the 510 plow as such, but merely suggesting something to watch for when buying plow books.
