Well I decided today to start putting the C back together so i can get it running.
I took the head and cleaned it and the valves some more, checked for a good seal on the valves, all checked out ok. I put the rocker bar on, on the bench in our shop. The bolts that hold it on are kind of bent...so putting it on is hard. You have to tap each side with a hammer until it goes all the way on...
Carried it out to the tractor, lugged it up and set it in place, dropped it down on the bolts.
I went to put the head nuts on..only to realize that the rocker bar was in the way. I tapped the bar bakc off (30 mins) and put the head nuts on, oh by the way, what should the torque be on the nuts? (1949 C (gas)?
I then dropped the pushrods in, but not before cleaning them up nicely. Set the rocker bar back on, and tediously taped it down, only to find that although it was down,4 of the pushords were not aligned with the rockers, so Ihad to tap it back up a half inch! arrgggghhh!

Anyways, got the head on, rockers, pushrods..the whole thing. i went to take the alternator off to find that th previous owner had chopped up the adjusting bar (more welds than the eiffel tower) to fit the alt. So Im going to need one of them. I beat the alternator off with a sledgehammer...only to later reconcile with the fact that i had destroyed the mounting bolt that holds the gen. on..( long one) Need one of them as well.

Now I just need to get the water neck on, get a manifold, some gaskets, a carb kit..dont know what carb I have though.., 2 brake shoes, brake springs, a new tool box, seat bracket, shock, spring and pan..A magneto (H4?) and the above misc parts that I found today...and Im riding!
oh, and a intrument tower base..

Still dont know of the condition of the hydraulic system, or the tranny, but I know the clutch is good!

Sounds to me like you don't have the slots in the rocker arm shaft lined up with the bolts. If the slots are lined up, you should not have to force the rocker assembly. If you look through the rocker assembly retaining hole, you can see the shaft. Turn the shaft until the slots are lined up with the hole. When I went to work on my C, some previous owner had forced the rocker assembly on without lining up the slots. It took much prying, choice words and more than an hour to get it off. With new stud bolts and the shaft turned correctly, the assembly slides right on. (and back off when you need to do it)

Get new bolts for the rocker arm assembly. Torque for the head is 80 ft-lbs, you have to retorque it after it runs a while and as you discovered the rocker arms must come off before the head is torqued.

Tommy, Welcome to the wonderful, zany world of tractor restoration. There is hardly ever a 1-1 ratio of things started to things completed. You start to do one thing and end up doing six. Easy tasks become hard ones and hard tasks become even harder. Its all in the adventure. Good luck, you sound like you're having fun, which is exactly the way it is supposed to be.

Oh tommy tommy tommy, you're learnin'! thw generator that I sent you fastens on with short bolts. the long one was something that was cobbled to hold the alternator. i guess we should have found you some unbent studs for the rocker arm but if you have it on now we will leave it alone. there is a guy that has been selling manifolds on ebay. I got on for my H, free shipping ang good value. do a search for manifolds on the farmall parts page. he even included the gasket. carb kits should be easy to find too. clean up your carb a little, you will find a small round tag, about ½inch with numbers on it. Have your glasses on cuz they are very small and hard to read. Good luck bud! Farmall Forever!

My advice would be, 1. set the head on, 2. torque to spec, 3 put push rods in and rocker arm assembly on and forget the bent bolts (get new ones), 4 torque to spec, 5 set valve clearance, 6 slap valve cover assembly on, 7 If the alternater brackets are screwy (make new ones). Don't make life any harder than it needs to be (which means don't put up with any extra bull????). Just my 2 cents.
