Just finished putting 40 H back together after new paint. Ran fine when I took it apart. I now hook the new coil up and get nothing. I have 5.9 volts at the coil in, and same at the other post out. Problem is when I put the wire on the dist. it goes dead. In is still 5.9 but thats where it stops. I changed the wire, tried another coil, same thing. Would sure appreciate some help. Thanks, Denny In Michigan.

the reason the wire goes dead is because the points are closed and the power from the coil is going straight to ground.this is supposed to happen.if you turn the engine a little to open the points, you will then show power on your wire.if you were to hook up the wire, then crank the engine with a test light on the wire you would see your test light flash each time the points open.when the light flashes the coil will fire thru the distributor to the plugs

Denny, i think you have to have tractor running to check at dist post?
or you got paint where it not to bee (no Ground)
just a shot in the dark or turn dist so points open or close

Thanks for the advise. The one thing I did with an M I have is test the wire on that one and it had power on in and out. Also do I have to be hooked up to light switch, (I'm not) or can I try to start with wire run from Bat. to coil. I,ll get it sometime. Keep the thoughts comming. Thanks
