Hello and thanks in advance...I need to remove the radiator from my 1945 M to fix a leak or two, so far this is what Ive done..... removed hood and grill, removed large plug from front of steering shaft, removed the cotter pin and nut which was behind the plug, near steering wheel, loosened the set screws on a slip collar and slipped the collar forward..... Now what?? does the steering shaft just pull backwards?? Doesnt seem to want to do that. Does it unscrew?? Tried alittle but didnt know how much force to use. Also, where the guages are mounted is what looks to be where a bearing is, however, I have no bearing there(or not much), the shaft thru that area is completely loose and I can move the shaft all around, like 1/2" all direcetions, am I missing something there?? HELP!!

Rick, You did a few things that you didn't need to. Once you removed the plug on the pedestal you didn't need to remove the cotter pin and bearing. They turn out with the worm gear, no need to take them off. If you disconnect the steering shaft at the center of the tractor you should be able to screw the shaft out the front of the pedestal. Good luck.

OK, tractor is new to me, excuse my ignorance...so the shaft unscrews(while in seat, turn to the left??), and the shaft will come out toward the rear of the tractor?? is that correct?? If it is, why would I have to mess with the ujoint near the rear of engine?? There would be plenty of room for it to go backwards. What is the "bolster"?? Thanks guys, "M" newbie

The shaft comes out the front, I think it turns to the left as you face it, anyway whichever way it unscrews. The seal I was referring is in the rear hole that the shaft goes thru. The upper bolster is the whole upside down V shape casting that the lower bolster (with the wheels) bolts to at the bottom, and that the steering shaft goes thru at the top -- in other words the thing you are talking about. You can't the shaft out the back because the worm gear on the end of the shaft won't fit thru the hole in the rear of the bolster.

Take the horizontal part loose in front of the U-joint, it's held by a clamp, woodruff key and bolt. The shaft will then unscrew from the sector gear and will pull right out. Replace the seal on the rear top of behind the sector gear or it will leak when you reassemble. Mine leaked anyway, so I repacked the gears with grease.

Steering shaft unscrews(easy) and comes out the front of the bolster. Unhook the steering shaft universal coupling that's near the rear of the engine. Sounds like you are missing bushing on steering shaft/gage support.

Havent messed with a whole lot a farmalls but on a deere you have to take the steering wheel off and slide the steering shaft out the front of the steering gear box in front of the radiator. You may have to turn the shaft to thread out the worm gear. Hope this helps.
