Thanks for the responses on the split--it is amazing how strong one bolt can be. Next question is about adjusting the clutch. I got this tractor from my father-in-law who had just put in a new clutch. There was almost no adjustment(6 inches of free play) left. The adjustment on the pressure plate is screwed all the way in. I have read that the linkage is the place for the adjustment anyhow. Is there more than one clutch for the H? This one is a 1948--SN 277139. There is no IH markings on the pressure plate. The disk has very little wear on it. There is a date of 8/11/1978 about the same time he put the clutch in. Thanks in advance for the advice.

The surface of the release fingers (the part that runs on the throwout bearing) is supposed to be 2 5/32" from the face of the pressure plate. Is yours close to that ? If so, take the pin out of the end of the clutch linkage rod and unscrew the clevis until you get 1 1/8" freeplay between the pedal and the deck.

The measurement from the fingers to the face of the pressure plate is about 3 3/16". It looks like there is an adjustment on the fingers. Will that get me to 2 5/32"?

The adjustment screws probably will get the fingers to 2 5/32", but that will move them away from the throwout bearing, making matters worse. So in addition to that, I would guess that something else is wrong.

The throwout bearing should sit 3/16" from the face of the fingers. It looks like the inner face of the clutch cover should be 27/32" from the face of the pressure plate.

On my H the arm on the clutch release shaft points straight down (new pressure plate, 2 yr old disk). The length of the clutch operating rod (from center to center, pedal to arm) is 31 1/2". Are the heavy washers that hold the release yoke to the cross shaft in place ? Is your release yoke bent ?

The heavy washers were there. One was broken. The yoke seemed to be straight. I have the flywheel off to replace the ring gear. I was hoping to get the tractor reassembled this weekend but I wont't have time to put it back together for a while. I guess that would be the time to check these measurements out. I have another question--since it is accessible, can I replace the rear main seal. It seems that the retainer will be hard to remove. Thanks for your help.

The rear seal retainer isn't hard to remove, it just has a lot of bolts. I don't think that the oil pan has to come off, just the little plate with the 3 bolts, and then the aluminum retainer. On mine, the retainer was warped, so I backed up the gasket with a bead of blue rtv. If you have the flywheel off, now is the time to do it.

According to the parts manual Serial #'s 501 to 391357 had a 10" Rockford clutch. Serial #'s 391358 and up had a 10 1/2" Rockford clutch. Serial numbers 332221 to 391357 could have an optional 10" Auburn clutch.
