Farmall A engine cover mounting question

Thanks again to everyone who responded to my earlier questions. My A appears to be a 1939 model, which makes me happy! For some reason I love the very early ones.

What are the "J" type things I see hanging down from the upper engine cover sheet metal in a lot of photos? Mine doesn't have them. It has Dzus type fasteners, although those on the grille and the upper cowl don't match up.

There doesn't appear to be anything for them to fit into except one arm underneath near the radiator. The back end of the upper part is hard against the fuel tank, but there's a good 3/4" gap between it and the grille part.

Any ideas why that would be??

Tks!

Butch

Butch, Judging from your description, I would guess that the original radiator has been replaced with one for a later model. The 39's had on the radiator 3 holes on each side. One hole (the closest to the radiator) was to mount the radiator to the mounting bracket. The next was the dzeus mounting hole for the grill, and the rearmost hole was the dzeus mounting hole for the hood. If you don't see the two dzeus holes with wire clips, your radiator is not matched to the year of your tractor. There may be a solution, however, and that is if your radiator is long enough (front to back) so that you can drill and install a dzeus reciever, you would only have to drill a hole to match up to the position of the dzeus bolt in the hood, and install the reciever. Dzeus fasteners are available, although I am not sure of the source. Perhaps someone else can point you in that direction.

Does your front cover have the dzus fasteners? Sometimes the radiators were changed and the wrong one put back as the 1/4 turn radiators are different than the j-hook ones. On a tractor that old who knows what all has been changed.

The front cover has holes in it (one on each side, one dead center at the bottom), but no fasteners. As I said, there doesn't appear to be anywhere for the ones on the sides to fasten into.

The top engine cover has Dzus fasteners, not the J hooks. Is the forward edge of the top cowling supposed to share holes with the grille part, or are there supposed to be separate mounts underneath for each piece? I have an arm with a single hole in it underneath, but it doesn't match up to either the top cowl or the grille Dzus fastener holes.

Tks!

Butch

Them (J) looking things are for your hood latches as they are on mine
