I am in the process of rebuilding a Farmall B engine. I took the valve cover off - removed the two nuts associated with the valve cover posts and removed the central nut(oiler)and bracket from the head. I expected the valve springs to push the valve train up. Did not, in fact the two 3/8 posts seem to be solidly stuck to the valve train stanchions. so far all efforts to loosen them have been futile - any suggestions before I get a "bigger hammer". Thanks Guys

Thanks everybody - the studs and rocker arm shaft were misaligned and the rocket shaft was forced on so hard that even with a webbing under each stanchion and two come a longs the webbing lifted the entire engine with out anything budging. This was a recently overhauled engine!!!! I tried unscewing the bolts but one broke off without a bit of movement. I finally got them off using a series of sharp chisels between the head and the stanchions. It was of course virtually impossible to remove the head with the valve train in place.

The two sstuds holding the rocker assy mite be stuck because the rocker shaft has a flat spot for the stude to clear and if they were not lined up and they used the nuts to press it down in position it will be hard to remove. You will have to bee carefull or you can break the rocker shaft quite easy. You mite be able to unscrew the studs first. You can tell if this is the problem as the threads will be marked from the assy being forced on. Good luck let us know if you get the assy off. gene b

Are the valves stuck, or are the rocker arm holddowns just stuck to the threaded studs? You should be able to spray some Blaster on the studs, and give it a while to wotk it's way down the threads, and then gently tap the metal around the studs, and apply more Blaster until things start to move.

If you plan on using the tractor I would recomend removing the head, and having a machine shop reface and or replace the valves and springs. If you are having that big of a problem under the valve cover the valves and seats cant be in much better condition. Not to say that you cant get it running, but using big hammers usually breaks somthing or makes for a temporary fix, just my opinion, Good luck with your project and I hope everything works out for you.
Good luck

I usually soak them in skunk oil of choice & then start "tapping " them. If you smite too hard, the keepers could jump out.
