Farmall A magneto cutoff switch choke mechanism

I've got what I believe to be a 1939 Farmall A with a 1951 vintage (casting date code 220W) engine on it. The data plate is missing, so I'm piecing together clues to come up with this info.

The magneto has a small assembly on the outside of it that rotates counterclockwise about 15 degrees to break the contact and kill the spark. There is no mechanism attached to this to allow me to operate it from the seat position, but there are some little guide flanges (one under the gas tank, one on the side of the block) which appear to have been guides for some kind of a mechanism.

Does anyone know anything about this magneto feature? Someone at Red Power's board said it was a feature of the 1939 model year magnetos.

Also, should I be able to operate the choke from the seat position? The tractor doesn't have a starter on it, so on one hand it would make sense if it didn't. But on the other hand, it would be nice to be able to actuate the choke without dismounting.

There's no casting date code on the bell housing, so I'm told that this also might indicate an early 1939 build tractor (agian, from the Red Power board). Anyone know??

Thanks!

Butch, The 39's had a mechanical kill switch which consited of a choke type cable mounted from the steering post to the actuator on the side of the magneto. To kill the engine one would simply pull the knob and that would ground out the magneto thru the condensor. Since the engine hand crank start, the choke was operated manually by the operator while dismounted from the tractor. The choke adjustment during warmup was also done before mounting the tractor.

Early models before starters had a flexable type cable going to a spring loaded sw on the mag for a kill sw. They did not have a choke rod going to the operators seat either. If you need a choke rod going to the seat i have some.

Not sure of this magneto set up but the serial number for the engine should be on a milled flat spot by #1(front) spark plug. Also, the 1939 A's had the tractor serial number on the peddle guard between the brake peddles, not on the left seat post. If your tractor left the factory without electric start you may not have a choke controll from the operator area as you would be in front of the tractor using the crank to start it. There is a lever on the side of the carburetor to operate the choke. Guess your supposed to let the engine warm up before you get on it?? I usually am out to the field before I take the choke completely off. Early modles did not have a mount in the bell housing for a starter if one was not equipped. Later modles had a blank plate in place of the starter if it was not equipped. Hope this helps. Dave.

Thanks y'all! This answers a lot of my questions. Now, where do I find either an original or replacement for the magneto cutoff switch and cable??

Tks!

Butch
