I recently saw a picture of an IH 6cylinder (291?) in an M. I have a 49' with a piece of crap motor so i am at a good starting point. I know of several donor combines for the project. I guess my question is how hard is it and how is it done.

THAT would be fun. That's all I have to say. I would like to see one and maybe run one someday.

It can be done. for frame rails, I would use 560, it is the same bell housing bolt pattern for the rails. The M frame rails will be too short to install a bolster, unless you lengthen them. then you can use the M rails, front end, and steering. Radiator will be tough, Lower hose on the M radiator is on the opposite side, so maybe use an H radiator. The flywheel off the 560 should work in the M, you may have to recut the flywheel to adapt the starter ring from the M to the 560. You would need to measure the distance from the engine back plate, to the back edge of the starter ring on the M, and the 560 to see what the spacing is. Clutch, 560, disk maybe Super M or the bigger M-450 disk to match the diameter of the flywheel and match the slines on the M input shaft. I know the 6 cyl will bolt right in the H, using early 460 parts, (flywheel, engine plate, rails, super H clutch disk, with 460 clutch, H throwout bearing, and H pilot bearing. Shold be the same items to match up on the M-560. ChadS

There was a similar setup at the Tri-State engine show in Portland, Indiana the last two summers. The owner explained that he used the engine from an 806 and how he put it into the SuperM. As I recall, in addition to lengthening the frame rails, steering shaft, and hood, he had to re-drill the SM flywheel to fit the 806 crankshaft. He also had an electric fan installed to move air through the SM radiatior. It was a nice looking tractor!

Get a hold of ChadS here or on the Pulling board. He's building a 460 w/ an H rear end. I've talked to him about the same thing. He can clue you in.
