Gentlemen, Just brought my 656 home a few days ago. I noticed, as I was starting her, some light smoke from under the battery box. I pulled the box cover and near as I could tell it was coming from the negative terminal. In looking it over it sure looked as thought the neg and pos cables are fairly light gauge. Could this alone be the problem? How heavy should they be? Would it matter if the negative was thin and not the positive? I should also mention the amp light came on for a short time then went off?

I guess you all may be hearing from me for a awhile until I get to know her better (if you don't mind)
thanks in advance
tom

You should also check the condition of the cable were it goes into the post clamp they sometimes get corroded in there resulting in a poor conection. Best to just replace the whole cable with a heavy duty one. Go to a CNH dealer or a napa store and ask for a heavy duty cable. I just bought one for my 1066 this morning at NAPA I had the same problem smoking termanal, I think it was 1 gauge. Don't mess with the cheap walmart like junk.

Thanks for the input Cowman and Scott. I somewhat suspected this to be the case and you confirmed it.
