I am looking for enough tractor to care for a 10 acre mini-ranch w/ 3 horses. I would like to be able to move round bails and possibly stack them 2 high. I do not know diddle about tractors and I will gladly accept any advice. Looking in the classifieds there are several tractors in my price range, $4000-$6000, but I don't know how big is big enough, is gas better than diesel, is 4wd needed w/ a loader, is a loader easy to add a couple of years down the road? I do not know why, but I am interested in IH Farmall tractors so I am posting this for for all of you IH folks. Thanks in advance!

Farmall 400, 460, 560, 656 ect.
Get bigger if you can. You will be amazed at how many more things you want to do with it after you get one.

I'd like to see a few stats on just exactly how many accidents on the farm are related to moving round bales. If I were you I would look for a wide front and the heavier the better. Keep those bales close to the ground until you are ready to lift them up and then go straight on. Watch turns. Loaded tires would be an asset.
This last is just my personal opinion from 15 years with a light tractor and a loader, but if I am using a loader I want ROPS. Never went over, but have come close.

yes a rops would be very useful,a friend of mine's dad was moving a round bale about 6 years ago and lifted it to put on top of a stack and somehow it ended up coming down on him ,needless to say he's in a wheelchair now, could have easily killed him though.i think alot of freak things can happen and usually to the most experienced, just never know.i myself live in some woods, lots of steep grades and trees etc,and am currently looking at a rops off a 240 utility to put on my 460 ute.

Well if you want to stack the hay a loader is a must, also a wide front end is safer if you have a loader. As far as size most smaller Farmalls don't have the wide front ends but can be found with them as after market set ups. Not to knock Farmalls but there are a lot of fords that would fit your bill. I my sefl have Fords, Farmalls, Olivers, Allis and JDs all get used differantly but all of them are good. If you still want to go with a farmall an H up to a 560 would probably do you good.
