Alternator rebuild

I was cleaning out the shop the other day and ran across an old alternator. I think it's a Delco 10SI unit. Anyway, I was thinking of converting my SMTA gas to 12volts and wondered what was involved to rebuild this alternator, (ie: how much money and how difficult would the job be). Also, is it worth it? Is it possible to buy a rebuilt unit from NAPA for not a lot of money?

I initially thought maybe the alternator was still operational but my Dad was quite certain that it wasn't.

Thanks for any input,
Chad

I bought a kit to rebuild a alternator (10SI) from a business that sells through EBay. Kit was about $25 and they have a special kit that not only converts the 10SI to a one wire alt but also enables it to "turn on" at the low speeds that are typical of a tractor. Try a word search on ebay or if you can't find them post again and I rumage around to find their name/phone.

old's advice is right on. You can buy a rebuilt unit at the parts store for about the same cost as the parts (bearings, brushes and regulator) to rebuild it yourself. And the store bought unit will usually have some sort of warrantee.

You might take the old alternator to your favorite NAPA, AutoZone or whatever. Most of these places will test an alternator free of charge.

You can buy a one wire for around $65 and a three wire for around $30. Cost of the parts to rebuild one is around $20-30 depending on what all you get.
