Farmall A Generator Question

Friend of mine just bought a '44 A. Previous owner did some "work" on the wiring. Resistor in the 4-position switch was shot so he replaced what I assume was a cut-out relay with a voltage regulator. Basically, we just want to make sure his wiring isn't like some of the other "work" he did on the tractor. I've got wiring diagrams, but I need to know which terminals are which on the generator and voltage regulator. No markings are visible on either. He also managed to hook things up negative ground. Want to get this back to positive ground and make sure the wiring is correct before we tear into some of the other projects. Thanks.

Thanks Guys. The resistor on the 4-position switch is definitely shot, so I assume that what he has is a voltage regulator mounted on the generator and not a cut-out. We've looked long and hard and can't find anything stamped into the generator or marked on the regulator. Must be an older style regulator since it has a metal cover rather than the bakelite type. I've got Bob M's wiring diagram, so once I identify the terminals, should be able to get things hooked up. Glad you mentioned re-polarizing the generator, that one might have slipped past us.

If you have been running negative ground and switch back to Positive, you will have to repolarize the generator. If your A is original, there is no voltage regulator, only a cutout relay to keep the battery from discharging through the generator when the engine is not running. Charging rate is controlled by the 4 position switch. In high charge postiong (around 10 amps), the field coil of the generator is grounded for max charge rate. The max charge rate is set by adjusting the third brush in the generator. In the low charge position, the field coil is grounded through the resistor on the four position switch, giving a lower charge rate of about 5 amps. There should be markings on the generator terminals of "F" for field and "A" or "G" for the generator output. These markings should be stamped into the metal of the generator housing near the terminals on the generator. I would suggest that if you have the cut out relay, to replace it with a regulator. You can get a regulator with the mounting bracket to mount on the generator just like the cutout relay. It will look just like the cutout and no one will know the difference but you and you will have a much more dependable system with better battery life. If you do that, you won't need the resistor on the 4 position switch and the switch will become just a switch for the lights. I should also point out that if you have lights, there are two resistors on the switch. One is for the dim position on the lights and the other for the charge rate.

Maury - Wiring should be like this:

- Generator "A" terminal to regulator "GEN" terminal
- Generator "F" to regulator "FLD"
- Regulator "BAT" to ammeter
- Regulator "L" to ignition switch & light switch power supply terminals. (If the regulator has no "L" terminal make the ignition and light power connection to the regulator "BAT" terminal.)

To swap ground simply reconnect the battery for positive ground then momentarily jumper the BAT and ARM terminals at the regulator. If the ammeter reads backward afterward, simply swap the wires at both ammeter terminals.

In the parts manual for my C there are a couple of wiring diagrams. I would assume that the A would have something similar. If you study it long enough you can figure it out. It shows what all of the posts on the light switch connect to. Good luck.
