Should I leave well enough alone on my H???

Behind the carb, on the block of my H there is a long cover plate, I think it is the water jacket cover. It doesn't leak and I believe it was never off. My question is, should I take it off to reseal it as a part of my beginning restaration? Also, the block drain plug is stuck, should I drill a hole in it then try to unscrew it or just leave it be? I flushed the cooling system last year and don't get hardly any sediment any more. Thanks!!

If you're like me, you gotta take it off to look inside, you won't be able to sleep at night unless you do. And if you're like me, you will twist off some bolts and spend two or three evenings trying to fix everything back up. But you'll be satisfied in the end.
Good luck
Paul

Take it off and have a look inside! That plate has passages on the back of it that direct the water flow between the cylinders - very important for cooling system performance. If these are rusted away you may overheat a couple of cylinders due to lack of water flow around them.

Take the cover off!

These plates are still available. You can get one from your Case-IH dealer, along with it's gasket or for less money from other suppliers. When you take it out, you will find it so corroded you will wonder how water got through it. At the same time you can flush some of the other crud out of the block.

Also, pull the plate on the other side of the engine and clean the crud out of your valve train. If you are overhauling the engine, you will want to do this anyway.

Leave well enough alone.I had similar thoughts when starting restoration on my smta, you will find all sorts of stuff to fix- free up- weld- grind- bolt- unbolt- heat up- and stick money into that HAS to be replaced or repaired, dont go looking for trouble.By the way invest in a good first aid kit and keep it in your repair shop,I think I spent just as much on bandades peroxide and gause than on the tractor.Good luck.Paul.

Could be, but that plate is no harder to replace than a valve cover.
