On my 41 farmall A it looks like the starter is operated by a pull rod that actuates the push button on the starter.I was told it was foot operated .I just don't see how that is possible..... .please help DA

Original rod is a push with your foot. Do you need one? send e-mail.

Sometimes the starter has been replaced with the wrong one and the terminal is on the wrong end as the switch is the same for either the A and B and C. It depends on which end the contac is located. Correct place for the A and B series switch is on the drive end. The C series the sw location is on the end towards the operator and is used with a pull rod. The SUPER A is the same as the C. Which rod do you need? I have both.

I have a 46 A that originally had a starter push rod. I know this because the switch is turned around from what my father's Super A has with its push rod. Someone had taken the lift-all lever and rigged it up as the starter push rod, which didn't work very well. I have looked for reproduction starter push rods but have found only the pull rods. I found an original push rod on eBay and bought it. They are about half the length of the pull rods and shouldn't be that hard to make for someone who is handy with metal working. OEM, Inc. may be making them by now.

Oops! I meant that my dad's Super A has the typical PULL rod, with a ring at the operator's end.

Dave, the early model A's had a push rod that would be foot activated. The Super A's had the pull rod which resembled a choke rod with the ring. Steel wheel ranch may be a good place to start in finding that assembly.

If you called it a push rod it may make more sence. You push on the rod to activate the starter button on the top of the starter. The button is spring loaded to return the push rod when you quit pushing on it.

But if you actually have to pull the rod to engage the switch, don't despair. Both push and pull switches are avaialbe for different applications and yours may have been replaced with a pull switch. I have a A like that and it works OK.

I think of it as an anti-theft device because a purist can't start it :)

Andy, In that case, I guess I'm fortunate my 40 A is hand crank start, since that way I wont have the delima of do I push, or do I pull.

And my A starts so easy I never bothered to fix the generator when the front bearing started squealing. It is waiting on the shelf.
