Overhauling my (H) I was going to order the kit from this site/ liners pistons and rings, my (h) has a distillate carb on it, but no tank to hold gasoline for start-up, So I am unsure if it is a distillate burner or gasser, they list two engine kits one for gas and one for distillate, How do I know which piston/liner/ ring kit to order ? all help is appreciated !

Look at your serial number plate. If it is an original whole tractor the ending of serial number indicates what fuel burning engine it was from factory. X1 I believe indicates gas burner. Distillate and kerosene burners had a little gas tank in front of the main fuel tank and to the right hand side and had an extra hole in the hood for the fill cap and neck of the little tank. The gas burners did not have the extra hole in the hood. Most keros and distillate burners have some what just been run on gas for years and some of the parts such as extra gas tank, radiator shutters, intake heated manifold and such could have been removed. I am not sure if gas pistons will work with a kero or distillate head. Make sure of that before you get some pistons that won't work. Seems like the heads were a little different for gas and distillate.

The instructions said 'distillate or kerosene cylinder head should not be used' with the 'Fire Crater Increased Power Package'. It looked like they would work, but the pistons would not help that much with the high volume heads. Has any one tried it ?

Johnathan - Did you ever figure out where the head came from ?

Jonathan, Due to the lack of the auxillary tank, it is a safe bet that your tractor like most have been operating on gasolene for a long while. While kerosene is availabe, distillate fuel is practically non-existant, or at least I havent seen any in years. If you install a gasoline kit, you can always put the auxillary tank and system on the tractor for cosmetic purposes. Nearly everyone I run into that have the Distillate or kerosene tractors and recondition to at least look original, do it that way. Distillate fuel became not only the fuel of choice, but the fuel most available during WWII as it was low grade, cheap, and a by-product of gasoline which was rationed heavily back then since the military got first priority. After the war, many if not most of the tractors equipped with distillate, or kerosene were converted to gasoline.

Do you know what the difference is in the two kits ? If it is a set of higher compression pistons, I would go with the gas kit, unless you want a very original tractor for some reason. 'High' compression in these motors is pretty modest (~6.75:1) by current standards.
