I found an M farmall a while back and finally decided to ask the guy about it since it hasnt moved in a while. The motor is locked up he said it got hot because the fan belt broke. He then put on a new belt and it ran fine but was locked up after a few days. It has wide front power steering the front tires are good the rears are ok but real wether cheched. The tractor is in real good shape other than the motor and he wants $750 and wont budge off the price. Is that a fair frice or not. I thought I would offer $500 but he said no. The main reson I wanted it is for parts for my M like the wide front and powersteering. Would $750 be to much? todd

I am by Chadron. What I was after was the wide front to put on the M I have. Mine has a narrow front with a loader. I thought I could pick this one pu for the parts.

a good wide front should be worth $500. I have a running M with wide front that I am going to sell I think. But the widefront has been welded.

$750 is high for a stuck tractor but it has extras on it. WFE, possible live hyd, and PS. WFE go for about $500, ps $350 and live pump $300. Take what you need and part the rest out. It should pay for its self.

Todd -- If you are not interested at $750 we would be - we have Sheppard Diesel engine conversion that was built for the M in the early 60s - we have one M with it already installed but have another engine waiting for just the tractor you mentioned - does this tractor have live hydraulics?? We are in Minnesota - where are you located??

Duane this is a strait M it has a hyd. pump on the distributor and a belly pump. I have been trying to think of a good reason to pay the $750 but if I dont I will let you know. I am located in western nebr. There are several old M around the area but this one is only a few miles from home. I know of several just setting and have been that way for a long time. todd

Todd, if like you said the hydraulic pump is located at the distributor it is either a M&W add on or a Super M that is a Live Hydraulic system the belly pump is normally for the old front mount cultivators which was kept so people with the old style cults could put them on a real quick way to tell is if you have a battery box under the seat and it's 12 volts and the main front casting has two big eyelet bolt mountings for front mount cultivators on each side. I guess you need to establish what year it is to arrive at a price. Pictures would help.

The live hyd on the SM/SH were not that much different than the belly pump, perhaps more pressure, but the main advantage was they were live. Hookups for the hyd on the cultivators should not have changed much. Yes the cultivator mounting on the front was a little different, doubt if that had much to do with the hydraulics, I don't know. Both systems were used for much more than just front mount cultivator's. My dad had a 47 H with a 3-disk semi-mounted plow (about the same plow slice width as a moldboard) that used the belly pump, it worked very well. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you said the belly pump was kept? The live hyd replaced the belly pump, the factory setup didn't have both. I suppose with an M&W with a separate reservoir you could have both systems. All letter series tractors were originally 6 volt, no matter where the battery was located.

My M is a 47 I think this one is about the same year. It has the battry under the gas tank and it is 6 volt. I am thinking pretty hard on buying it like you said the parts I need are spendy. I know of another M with a good motor but the steering gear up by the radiator came apart and he wants to get it out of his yard. M aybe I could put them to gether and make one out of two. todd

Todd, If The front end is good, and I mean damn good! Put Five hundred in $100 dollar bills in your shirt pocket. Another $125 in your jeans pocket. Go back an offer 500 cash, pull it out and fan the bills. See if he will bite on that! If not say you will split the difference with him. Cash Of coarse. He will bite then, only after he agrees to $625 do you pull out the remaining $125 dollars (Don't care on what denominations these bill are)
Do you really need the other parts off of this tractor, enough to justify the extra cost? Wide fronts can be had for an average price of about $500 or so.
Unless you cave too easyly, carry the remaining $125 also.
For me, this guy has to come some to me too for a deal to happen.
Hope this helps,
John A.
